What to expect during a 15-minute consult

Hiring a health coach can be difficult. After all, you’re looking for someone to help you clarify and hit your goals to improve your health! It doesn’t need to be impossible, though. Many health coaches offer a free 15-minute consult as a no-cost, no-obligation way to get to know each other and see if the coach would be a good fit.

There are two parts to a 15-minute health coaching consult: yours and mine. We start by exploring why you want to start health coaching and what you want to work on, then review your health history and current healthcare team, medications, supplements, and lifestyle. We want to get all these details down as a part of our foundation before we start working!

Why do you want to start health coaching?

What’s bringing you to the call? What was the moment that made you think, “I need health coaching in my life”? Those details are how we start the call. This is the exciting part! You’re choosing a new path and I’m honored you’re exploring including me! 

I’ll ask you for some clarifying details if needed, and then we’ll move into the next step.

Exploring your health history

Second, we’ll explore your health history. Even though as a health coach I can’t diagnose, treat, prescribe, or cure, it’s important that I know these details so that I can ask the right questions, help you explore your thoughts and feelings around each piece of your health, and offer information if you’d like it.

This also includes any medications, supplements, and what your lifestyle is like.

After looking backward at your health history, it’s then time to look forward at your support team.

Breaking down your healthcare team

The last piece of our “getting to know you” section is your healthcare team. We’ll review your doctors, therapist, functional practitioner, and anyone else you work with to make sure I have a good framework on who you’ve enlisted to help you heal.

I also have a HIPAA release form if you would like me to discuss details with some or all of your providers.

Then it’s time to learn more about coaching!

Why coaching is beneficial

Next, we’ll explore what you currently know about health coaching, and why it’s beneficial. I’ll answer any questions you have about the process, and speak to the benefits, like improved health vision, better goal setting and accountability, clarity, and forward movement.

The next step in the consult call is sharing what you can expect during each session.

What to expect during a health coaching session

Knowing that health coaching is new for many people, next we’ll review what to expect during a health coaching session. I’ll share how you pick the focus each session, we’ll discuss why it’s important, explore potential roadblocks, and set you up for success for the coming week.

While many clients choose to meet weekly, I offer each the opportunity to choose how long they want to work on their goal before the next meeting.

Now we’re onto the last step of the call.

Reviewing fees and contract length

The last step of the call is reviewing the coaching fees and contract length. I do offer a sliding scale, and this is where we can discuss that if needed. Most contract lengths are three months, though coaching can go longer than that.

And, don’t worry, if it ends up not being a good fit or you’re doing great and only need two months of coaching, we can end the contract with a written confirmation.

Once we review these items, it’s time for the final question: are you ready?
